PASSPORT RENEWAL BY MAIL
To be eligible for passport renewal by mail, the following criteria must be met:
• Your most recent passport was issued on, or after, your 16th birthday
• You must be able to present your most recently issued passport
• No more than 15 years have passed since the date your most recent passport was issued.
If the above criteria are not met, you cannot renew your passport by mail; you must renew your passport in person. Please see the "Passport Renewal" for more information.
Photographs
Two identical passport photographs are required. The Embassy will reject any photographs that do not meet the specified requirements.
Fee
Effective May 1, 2008, the fee for passport renewal by mail will be $75.00 or SEK 480.00. This means that any payment in Swedish kronor received by the Embassy on, or after, May 1 must be in the amount of SEK 480.00. Checks in amounts other than this will be returned to the sender. Payment should be made by a bank check (postväxel), available from any bank, payable to the U.S. Embassy. Personal checks and postal money orders ("postanvisning") are NOT accepted.
You must also enclose a self-addressed envelope with postage covering registered mail (61 SEK) so that we may return your new and old cancelled passport without delay. If no envelope is submitted, the Embassy will be unable to process the application.
Where to send the application
Please send your passport application, your current passport, payment, self-addressed return envelope with postage (61SEK), and photos to the following address:
Embassy of the United States of America
American Citizen Services
Dag Hammarskjolds vag 31
11589 Stockholm.
Failure to submit a complete and correct application will delay your case.
Since passports are such valuable documents, we recommend that you use registered mail (rekommenderad post) when sending the passport applications to the U.S. Embassy.
Passport application
Please use Form DS 82. This form is downloaded from the Department of State’s website. Please disregard the instructions printed on pages 1-2 on the form since that information pertains to passport processing when residing in the U.S. The DS 82 form must be printed on individual pages; double-sided applications are not accepted. Do not send the application to any address listed on the form; renewal must be processed by the U.S. Embassy in Stockholm. You may submit this form by mail, or submit it in person at the Embassy. Regardless of how you choose to submit your application, you must bring a self-addressed envelope with postage to cover the cost of registered mail back to you (stamps for 61SEK). You cannot buy stamps at the Embassy. Download Form DS 82 here.
PERSONAL APPEARANCE OF ALL MINORS
To enhance the accurate identification of passport applicants and aid in the prevention of international child abduction and trafficking, the Department of State requires the personal appearance of all minors applying for U.S. passports. This applies even if the child has previously been issued a passport, regardless of place of issuance. The personal appearance requirement for all minors is a further step towards ensuring the integrity of the passport application process. In addition, passsports renewal by mail is now restricted to applicants who hold a full validity passport which was issued when the applicant was 16 or older. Applicants who had not turned 16 at the time when the passport was issued cannot renew passports by mail, but must apply in person at the Embassy.
