Passport Renewal Applicants Who Are Not Eligible For Renewal by Mail

Certain applicants must appear at the Embassy in person to renew a passport. The passport application must be signed in the presence of a Consular Officer. We are open to the public between 9 and 11AM, Monday through Friday, except for U.S. and Swedish holidays. No appointment is necessary to renew a passport.

Please follow the instructions on this page if:

• You can present your last issued U.S. passport; and

• You had not turned 16 when your last U.S. passport was issued, OR if more than 15 years have passed since your most recent passport was issued.

Photographs

Two identical passport photographs are required. The Embassy will reject any photographs that do not meet the specified requirements.

Fee

The fee for in person renewal of an adult passport (age 16 or older), is $100.00 or SEK 800.00, and $85.00 or SEK 680.00, for children under the age of 16. Personal checks and postal money orders ("postanvisning") are NOT accepted. You may pay in cash (USD or SEK) or by credit card.

Social Security Number

Please note that according to U.S. law (26 USC 6039E) applicants for U.S. passports must provide a correct Social Security Number on the passport application.  Failure to provide a Social Security Number if you have been issued one can result in a $500 fine enforced by the IRS.

If you have never been issued a Social Security Number, write zeros in the boxes. If you cannot remember your number, please contact the regional Federal Benefits Unit at the U.S. Embassy in Oslo for information regarding obtaining a replacement card.

The U.S. Embassy in Stockholm does not have access to Social Security Administration records.

Passport application

Please use Form DS 11. This form is downloaded from the Department of State’s website. Please disregard the instructions printed on pages 1-2 since that information pertains to passport renewal when residing in the U.S. Please be sure to comply with the very important additional requirements when renewing passports for children under age 16 which requires both parents/legal guardians to consent to the issuance of the passport and to present proof of custody. Please view the additional requirements here.

The DS 11 form must be printed on individual pages; double-sided applications are not accepted. Download form DS 11 here.
