Applying for an IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)
An ITIN is a nine-digit number issued by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to individuals who are required to have a U.S. taxpayer identification number but do not have, and are not eligible to obtain, a Social Security Number (SSN). For more detailed information, please read the instructions accompanying the W-7 form (see below).
In order to obtain a ITIN you must first complete form W-7 (downloaded from the IRS website) and then obtain a certified copy of your passport. Please note that according to IRS reghulations, only a U.S. Consular Officer is authorized to certify these copies. You may not use a Swedish notary public for this purpose.
You may obtain a certified copy of your passport in person or by mail. The fee for this service is $30 or SEK 240 per certified copy. If you apply by mail, the payment should be made by a bank check (postväxel, available at any bank) payable to the U.S. Embassy. Please include a self-addressed return envelope with postage for 56 SEK to cover the cost of returning the passport and the certified copy to you via registered mail.
Send the passport in original, payment and return envelope along with a note requesting a certified copy for an ITIN number to the following address:
American Embassy
American Citizen Services
Dag Hammarskjölds väg 31
115 89 Stockholm
If you want to obtain the copy in person, please visit the embassy during our opening hours betwen 9:00 and 11:00 AM, Monday-Friday, except for Swedish and U.S. holidays. No appointment is necessary. Payment may then be made in cash or by credit card, USD or SEK.
Please note: You cannot obtain an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number from the Embassy, only a certified copy of your passport. The IRS is responsible for issuing the number, and you will send the application to the IRS address listed in the instructions for the W7 form.
