Social Security numbers are issued to U.S. citizens and to green card holders. Green card holders acquire their number after they are admitted to the U.S. Any U.S. citizen may apply for a social security number.
All applicants over 12 years of age or older must apply in person at the Embassy! Opening hours are from 9.00 to 11.00, Monday-Friday, except for American and Swedish holidays. No appointment is necessary.

IF YOU NEVER HAD A NUMBER AND ARE UNDER 12:
You must provide:
- US Passport OR US Resident Alien Card
AND
- Birth Certificate - If you were born in Sweden you need to submit your Swedish birth certificate, which you request from the Swedish tax authorities (Skattemyndigheten). It is called a "personbevis", and it must state names of father and mother. You should also request the tax authorities to put a stamp on the personbevis to verify that it is an original document. You can also submit a Consular Report of Birth Abroad. All documents must be originals!
- For parents applying on behalf of a child (under 12), you must provide proof of identification for yourself, such as passport or driving license. We will not accept birth certificates, marriage certificates or SSN cards as proof of your identification. All documents must be originals!
Parents must also provide their Social Security Number in the space provided. If the parents do not have a number, please write the word "NONE" in this section (8B and/or 9B). However, if the parent has a number but does not know it, please fill in a separate form SS-5 for each parent, who has a Social Security number, but does not know it.
IF YOU HAVE NEVER HAD A NUMBER AND ARE OVER 12:
You must make a personal appearance at the US Embassy in Stockholm; parents cannot apply on behalf of children age 12 or older
You must provide:

NOTE! If you were born in the United States and are over the age of 12 and if you have never had a Social Security number, you must explain why you have never had a number. You must also provide proof of your foreign residence such school records, health cards, old passports that prove your foreign residency or any other document that proves you have lived outside the United States.

IF YOU NEED TO CHANGE YOUR NAME ON YOUR SSN CARD:

- Proof of Name Change, such as a Personbevis stating old and new name, Marriage Certificate, Divorce Decree, Adoption Certificate, Official and Legal Document (such as a Deed Poll or Statutory Declaration) or US Court Order
ALL APPLICANTS PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING:
Military personnel who were born in the United States may provide Military Identifications Cards instead of passports.
WE DO NOT ACCEPT PHOTOCOPIES OF DOCUMENTS. The application must be supported by ORIGINAL documents. All documents will be returned to the applicant immediately after they have been seen.

PLEASE NOTE THAT IF THE APPLICANT WAS BORN IN THE UNITED STATES, IT MAY TAKE UP TO SIX MONTHS TO OBTAIN A NUMBER. THIS IS BECAUSE THE APPLICANT'S BIRTH HAS TO BE VERIFIED WITH THE BUREAU OF VITAL STATISTICS IN THE APPLICANT'S PLACE OF BIRTH BEFORE A NUMBER CAN BE ISSUED.
