Immigrant Visas

An immigrant visa is required of anyone who wishes to enter the United States to reside there permanently, whether or not that person plans to seek employment in the United States.

U.S. immigration law provides for the issuance of immigrant visas in four general categories: Immediate relatives, Family based, Employment based and Diversity Immigrant Visa, known as the "green card" lottery.

Processing time vary depending on your relationship to petitioner and the required documentation. Upon entry into the United States, an immigrant visa holder is processed for a Permanent Resident Card (PRC) commonly known as the Green Card.

Please note: Petitions for Alien Relatives, including spouses, (I-130) must be filed at the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) office responsible for the petitioners, not the applicant’s, place of residence. A U.S. citizen may file the immediate relative petition on behalf of his/her spouse and/or minor child at the U.S. Embassy in Stockholm, provided the U.S. citizen petitioner can show that he/she has been legally residing in the consular district continuously for at least six months before filing the petition.

To demonstrate residency in a consular district, U.S. citizen petitioners must be able to show that they have permissions to reside in the consular district and that they have been doing so continously for at least six months before filing the petition. Individuals who are in the country on a temporary status, such as students or tourists, would not be considered to meet the residency standard.

After completing the Checklist for U.S. citizens residing in Sweden, the U.S. citizen can drop in to file a petition Monday through Thursday 9 AM to 11 AM. Please note that the Immigrant Visa Unit is closed on Fridays, and on U.S. and Swedish holidays.
